The North African Undergraduate Exchange Program will provide a group of 21 potential leaders from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia with an integrated and imaginatively designed academic and educational travel program. The overall objectives of the program for North African participants are:
| • to illuminate the history and evolution of U.S. society, culture, values, and institutions, broadly
defined; |
| • to develop the participants' leadership and collective problem-solving skills; |
| • to provide community service experiences to learn about grassroots approaches to solving
community problems; |
| • to provide opportunities for participants to meet American citizens from a variety of backgrounds,
interact with high-school peers, and to speak to appropriate student and civic groups about their
experiences and life in their home countries; and |
| • to strengthen English language skills. |
The overall objectives of the program for U.S. participants over the course of two years are:
| • to provide opportunities for participants to meet North African peers and foster mutual
understanding; |
| • to gain insight into the Arab world, Islam, and the broader Middle East through a specific
understanding of one Arab country and its history, geography, society, language, and religion; |
| • to develop the participants' leadership and collective problem-solving skills through collaboration
and mentoring; |
• to provide community service experiences to learn about grassroots approaches to solving
community problems; and |
