Office of International Programs

LET THE WORLD BE YOUR CLASSROOM!

The Office of International Programs assists students in researching, planning and implementing study abroad as a part of their academic plan while at CNU. OIP serves as a clearinghouse to review and evaluate study abroad programs, to guide students in the application process, and to ensure that each participating student’s academic needs and goals are well served.

Where can I go?

Students have participated in a number of CNU faculty-led summer and short term study abroad programs. Recent CNU programs have included travel to:

  • Dublin, Ireland – James Joyce Seminar
  • Oxford, England – Oxford Seminar
  • Shanghai, China – Chinese Language
  • Berlin, Germany – Seminar in Berlin
  • Scotland – Spiritual Journeys and the Highlands of Scotland
  • Bath, England – Comparative Justice Seminar
  • Andalusia, Spain – Senior Seminar
  • Spain and Morocco – Geography Study
  • London, England – British and American Theatre in the 20th Century
  • Athens, Greece – Seminar in Greece
  • Iceland, Norway and Germany - Geography Study
  • Morocco - Tidewater-North Africa Exchange Program (TiNA)
  • Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg & France - Exploration of the European Union
  • Other programs have traveled to France, Italy, Spain, Belgium and Kenya
  • Future programs will travel to Costa Rica; Greifswald, Germany; Ireland; France and Germany

What about other, non-CNU faculty-led programs?

Students also participate in non-CNU studies abroad as well, working through other sponsoring organizations. CNU students have studied abroad in Australia, Costa Rica, England, France, Germany, Greece, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Norway and Spain. Participation through other sponsoring/facilitating organizations is reviewed and approved by the Director of International Initiatives and Fellowships. Check in the Office of International Programs for additional information and a list of approved programs.

Who may participate in study abroad?

All qualified CNU students are encouraged to participate in study abroad, and may do so during a full academic year, a semester, or in a summer program. Summer studies abroad can run for as short a time as one week, or the entire summer break. Students also may participate in short-term study abroad programs during winter break or spring break.

Is study abroad open to students of all majors?

Indeed it is! Students of all majors participate in study abroad. It is a great opportunity for students of all academic disciplines. For example, biology students studying abroad in Australia can pursue studies along the Great Barrier Reef, while their peers in the field of sociology pursue studies of the indigenous peoples of the Australian outback.

When do students usually participate in study abroad?

Typically, students will participate in a semester abroad sometime in their junior year, but they are not bound to this. For some, study abroad during a different point in their academic career may be more advantageous.

The Director of OIP will advise each student according to his or her specific academic needs and concerns to plan and implement the optimum study abroad session for that student.

How can I find out more?

  • Study Abroad Informational Workshops: Students wishing to study abroad should sign up for a study abroad informational workshop; these are offered throughout the semester.
  • Peer Counselors: Former participants in study abroad are a wonderful resource for any student interested in pursuing this opportunity. Peers are more than happy to share their experiences and can offer a unique perspective.
  • Resource Library: Students also may visit the OIP resource library in the OIP office in the Student Union.
