Semester in Prague

Spring 2008

"What a great experience it is!!  Not only do we have amazing professors and classes, we get to go on excursions around Europe!!  We get to experience and understand cultures from Berlin and Vienna while living at Castle Jeneralka in Prague, Czech Republic.  Studying abroad with fellow classmates is definitely an experience of a lifetime!  I am most definitely pleased that I took this opportunity of studying a semester in another country!

Semester in Prague alumna, Fall 2006

Christopher Newport University sponsors a study abroad program in the beautiful and historic city of Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. The Czech Republic is in the heart of Europe, located at the crossroads of numerous cultures. The city of Prague is rich in history and culture, world-famous festivals, prestigious art exhibitions, theatre and concerts. Prague has had many nicknames, among them the "City of 100 Towers," the "Heart of Europe," and "Golden Prague." The historical center of the city is situated on both banks of the Vltava River. The center consists of six sectors, or quarters, which at one time were independent municipalities until they were unified into one city in the 18th century. Each unique on its own, the combined six sectors form the historical core of Prague, which in 1992 was listed in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Register. It is our pleasure to present this outstanding semester in Prague to qualified Christopher Newport University students.

Open to CNU students only, the Semester in Prague Study Abroad Program offers students the unique opportunity to live and study in a safe, centrally-located city that is in close proximity of some of Europe's culturally richest cities, such as Dresden, Salzburg, Berlin, Vienna and Venice, none more than 8 hours' drive away. With such extraordinary sites so close to the CNU Study Center, the Program will include a number of trips, field trips, and excursions to a number of locales, both within Prague and beyond.

PragueStudents will live and study at the CNU Study Center in Prague, located just northwest of the center of the city, a short and easy bus ride away. The Study Center is housed in an historic complex located in the Sarka Valley on the Sarecky Stream. Classes will be taught at the Study Center, making it a convenient arrangement for CNU students, who will live in apartment-style residences on site. Meals will be served in the Study Center's dining hall, and students will have access to internet and telephone service, laundry facilities and library privileges.

Spring 2008 will be led by Professors Caroline Garrett (Fine Art & Art History) and Brana Mijatovic (Music), who will join Dr. Henry Kabat, On-Site Coordinator for the CNU in Prague Program.  For course information and descriptions, click here.
