The Office of International Programs helps students to identify and apply for prestigious scholarships and fellowships for research and study opportunities.
What are Prestigious Scholarships and Fellowships?
Prestigious Scholarships or Fellowships are highly competitive monetary awards granted to limited numbers of highly qualified candidates.
What are the criteria?
These types of awards are based on a variety of criteria, such as overall academic achievement, outstanding achievement in the academic major, participation in community service, leadership initiatives, demonstrated financial need or a combination of these and other criteria specific to each award. In general, candidates applying for prestigious scholarships or fellowships should be students who excel academically and who demonstrate leadership and commitment to the CNU community and the community at large. Students of all majors should consider prestigious scholarships or fellowships, as there are many which are discipline-specific, while others are more wide-ranging in scope.
What is the difference between a scholarship and a fellowship?
A scholarship is a monetary award given to a student based on need, service or merit. Need-based scholarships support students in financial need, without which they could not afford the cost of higher education. Service scholarships recognize and award students whose participation in volunteer work and community service contributes to the betterment of their school and/or community. Merit scholarships reward excellence in academic achievement.
Fellowships support students who wish to pursue graduate study in a field underwritten by the granting sponsor. The student will become a "fellow," participating in the professional, academic and social activities that are part of the "fellowship" program. Typically, fellows are awarded a combination of tuition reimbursement (or waiver) and financial support/remuneration. Essentially, the fellowship is an employment arrangement accompanied by coursework leading to a graduate, typically doctoral, degree.
The above descriptions are by definition quite general in scope. For each specific scholarship or fellowship application process, the requirements will be unique to that particular award. Students will approach the research for scholarships and fellowships accordingly.
